Ask yourself…

In the journey of life, there’s a path that is all too common, yet seldom recognized for what it truly is The Road to the Middle. It’s the path that leads to a life marked by mediocrity, a life where the extraordinary remains a distant dream, shadowed by the ordinary. As a performance coach, I’ve seen too many individuals, talented and capable, who find themselves stuck in this middle lane. Why? Because the road to excellence requires choices that are hard, sometimes uncomfortable, and often terrifying.

The Comfort of The Middle

Most people opt for the middle ground because it’s safe. It’s comfortable. The middle doesn’t ask too much of us; it doesn’t push us beyond our limits. It’s the place where we don’t have to confront our fears, where we can avoid failure by not challenging ourselves. But what is the real cost of this comfort?

Living in mediocrity means living a life not fully realized. It’s settling for ‘good enough’ instead of striving for the best. It’s about setting our dreams on a shelf to collect dust, rather than bringing them to the forefront of our lives and giving them a chance to flourish.

The Challenge to Be the Best

Being the best isn’t about being better than others; it’s about being the best version of ourselves. But this requires a level of dedication and a willingness to make hard choices.

Here’s what it takes:

1. Embrace Discomfort

Excellence lies on the other side of discomfort. Embrace it. Whether it’s waking up early to train, staying late to perfect a skill, or stepping out of your comfort zone to take on a challenging project, these moments of discomfort are where true growth happens.

2. Commit to Continuous Learning

Stagnation is the enemy of greatness. Commit to lifelong learning. This means always seeking out new knowledge, refining your skills, and staying curious. Read books, take courses, find mentors – keep adding tools to your arsenal.

3. Set Audacious Goals

Mediocrity is fueled by small thinking. Break free by setting audacious, almost intimidating, goals. These goals should ignite a fire within you and push you beyond your perceived limits.

4. Cultivate Resilience

The road to excellence is fraught with setbacks and failures. Cultivate a mindset of resilience. Learn from each failure, adapt, and keep moving forward. The most successful people are not those who never fail, but those who refuse to let failure define them.

5. Surround Yourself with Excellence

The company you keep can either elevate you or anchor you. Surround yourself with people who challenge you, who inspire you, who push you towards greatness. Positive, driven, and goal-oriented individuals are invaluable in the pursuit of excellence.

Turning Aspiration into Action

It’s easy to talk about wanting to be the best, but action is where the real change happens. Here’s a practical exercise to get started:

· Write Down Your Goals: Be specific. What do you want to achieve in one year? Five years? Ten years?

· Identify the Hard Choices: What are the hard choices you need to make to reach these goals? Write them down.

· Create a Plan: Break down these hard choices into manageable steps. What can you do today, this week, this month to move forward?

· Review and Adjust: Regularly review your progress. Adjust your plan as needed but keep moving forward.

Conclusion

The road to the middle is lined with good intentions and missed opportunities. It’s a place where dreams go to die quietly. But you don’t have to stay there. You have the power to break free, to make the hard choices, and to pursue the path of excellence. The journey won’t be easy, but the rewards – a life of fulfillment, purpose, and extraordinary achievement – are worth every bit of effort.

As a performance coach, my challenge to you is this: Dare to be the best. Step off the road to the middle and take the path less traveled. Your extraordinary life is waiting.

In your pursuit of excellence, remember, it’s not just about reaching the destination. It’s about who you become along the way. Stay committed, stay resilient, and never settle for the middle.
